Annemarie Jacir's vision is brilliant, emotional and fresh in this politically charged feature debut , the story of Soraya (Suheir Hammad), a Brooklyn-born woman in a working class community of Palestinian refugees. When she dis- covers that her grandfather, exiled in 1948, has savings that were frozen in a bank account in Jaffa, the direct, stubborn and determined young woman fulfills her life-long dream of returning to Palestine in order to claim what is rightfully hers. Struggling to feel at home in the land of her ancestors -- and rebuffed by the country's financial institutions -- she meets Emad, a young Palestinian whose ambition, contrary to hers, is to leave forever. Tired of the constraints that dictate their lives, they devise a plan to be free, whatever the consequences may be.
