Belgian filmmaker and media artist Johan Grimonprez provocatively, and oddly unsettlingly, uses Alfred Hitchcock as a filter through which to examine the Cold War -- and its attendant media-generated obsessions -- in his intriguing documentary/fiction hybrid DOUBLE TAKE. It does not take much to evoke the atmosphere of the cold war paranoia that thickened anew in the years between the Sputnik launching and the Cuban missile crisis. Using a meticulous array of mixed media bits and archival footage, including a story about Hitchcock encountering his double during production of THE BIRDS, Grimonprez traces the global rise of fear as a commodity, examining modern history through the lens of mass media, advertising and Hollywood. Edited with great invention and precision, it's a true treat for any Hitchcock buff to delight in.
