This fanciful modern-day Russian fairy tale, centering on an introverted young girl who believes she can control the weather and make wishes come true, is rich in charm, romance and whimsy. When young Alisa, an endearingly odd child, is denied the opportunity to take ballet lessons, she makes a ten-year vow of silence and is sent to a special school. It is there that she begins to realize her unique talents. At the age of seventeen, she journeys from her small seaside town to Moscow and upon falling immediately in love with a troubled man named Sasha, learns there are limitations to her wish-granting powers. This quirky, imaginative and innovative story allows its heroine a chance to rediscover her voice. Mermaid is a vibrant and visual feast for the eyes that will leave you with a dreamy smile on your face and a longing for days of lost innocence.
