This unhurried and incredibly intimate story set in the arctic regions before Inuit tribes were introduced to Europeans in their native land is gloriously interlaced with sweeping scenes of wintry tundra. Two isolated families meet after many years. The elders tell stories, young people get married and it is a joyous celebration. But Ningiuq, an old woman of strength and wisdom, sees the world around her as fragile, feels the need to reflect on life. Seizing the opportunity for some time alone, she volunteers to take on the chore of drying the winter’s successful fishing cache on a remote island. Her young and adored grandson, Maniq, comes along for the journey. Drawing on her deep spirituality and all of her survival skills, Ningiuq is determined to protect Maniq when their family fails to return and the cold of fall begins to set in. It is an engaging and sweetly told story of the love of family and offers the rare opportunity to glimpse a culture not often portrayed on screen.
