Canadian director Atom Egoyan, who has touched us with the deeply emotional journeys of Exotica and Oscar nominee The Sweet Hereafter, takes on themes of technology, terrorism and fear in his latest powerful feature. When his high school French class is asked to translate a news article about a terrorist who planted a bomb in his pregnant girlfriend's luggage, Simon (Devon Bostick) starts digging into his own family's murky past. His claims about the deaths of his father (Noam Jenkins) and mother Rachel (Rachel Blanchard) stir up a storm in his own life, and in communities both local and virtual. When his uncle and guardian Tom (Scott Speedman) shuts him out emotionally, he finds solace in his mysterious French teacher, Sabine (Arsinee Khanjian). Egoyan masters his themes like a composer, bringing different textures and tones to the fore and into conversation with one another.
