COMPETITION EVENTS: AND THE WINNERS ARE...

“Show Me The Path”, the Salem Film Festival Youth and Amateur Competition, is a resource for aspiring filmmakers to showcase their talents and interact with industry professionals. The weeklong event will showcase work submitted by youth and amateur filmmakers in the following categories: The 72 Hour Challenge, Short Narrative, Non-Fiction, and Abstract/Artistic. Entries in all categories have been scored by a competition jury. The highest scoring entries are being screened at The Historic Elsinore Theater at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19.

Weeklong Activities
Previews of Youth and Amateur Film Submissions
Monday, April 14th - Saturday, April 19th 
10 a.m. until closing
IKE Box, Corner of Cottage & Chemeketa Streets

Admission: Free

Drop in and watch as submissions are looped on multiple screens. Viewers will be invited to vote for their favorites. Votes cast between Monday and Friday will be tallied, and the IKE Customer’s Choice selection will be announced during the Youth and Amateur Awards Ceremony at The Historic Elsinore Theater on Saturday.

SFF Youth & Amateur Competition Public Screenings

72-Hour Entries
Tuesday, April 15th , 6 p.m.
IKE Box, Corner of Cottage & Chemeketa Streets

Admission: $5

Youth and amateur groups competed to create an original production in just 72 hours after being given a set of four criteria, which included the genre, a character description, one line of dialogue and a prop. The work of the groups who completed their projects on time will be screened and discussed.

Show Me the Path Professional Panel Discussion
Writers, Writing and Screenwriting
Thursday, April 17th, 6:30 p.m.
IKE Box, Corner of Cottage & Chemeketa Streets

Admission: $5

Professional writers and producers from motion picture, independent film, and television will share insight on developing a concept into a product.  Participate in conversations on writing style, concept creation, and career paths. This is a must attend for aspiring filmmakers.

John Paul Cooney (Actor, Screenwriter, Author; Group In Progress production company)
Andrew Stanfield ( Assistant Director, Associate Producer; graduate of the Act One Screenwriting Program)

Youth & Amateur Awards Ceremony

The Historic Elsinore Theatre

Admission: $8.00 (included with Festival Pass)

The pinnacle of the Show Me the Path Youth and Amateur Competition is certain to be the screenings and awards ceremony at The Historic Elsinore Theatre. Finalists will be screened and award honors in true Hollywood style. Scoring tabulations for all participants will be available.

A fork finds himself in love with a spoon. A tale of utensil love.

A documentary detailing the story of a man whose thumb saves his life, and the lives of his offspring and grandchildren during WWII.


Dry Humping Saves Lives - Kristin Konsterlie

Students of Lincoln High School create reality-based HIV Education (grades 11&12, Service Learning Center of the Northwest Film Center, Portland).

 

Another Mans Shoes - Royce Gorsuch
Story of one decision affecting three lives. Shot in Salem & Portland. Original script and score.


Randal - Alex McNall

Some rocks have crystals inside, some. The only way to find out is by breaking them open.


Alien Hunter - Josh Miller
A young man whose job it is to defend earth from an alien invader.

 


Blame Fiona - Kristin Konsterlie

A comedy of errors in which fate has the last word. Produced by NW Film Center Media Arts Academy for Teens Summer 07.

 

 

Ticket Information

Each group that entered SFF-YAC is entitled to two complimentary tickets for all of the “Show Me The Path” screening events. In order to reserve your free tickets, please send a request prior to the screenings to Jason@salemfilmfestival.com. Include your name and the titles of your film or films. Extra tickets can be purchased at the Elsinore and all tickets for events at the Ike Box will be sold at the door.

72 HOUR PROJECT

SUBMISSION DEADLINE HAS PASSED FOR 2008.
KEEP US IN MIND FOR 2009!

The SFF Youth & Amateur Competition is thrilled to again offer this additional category to showcase our contestants’ filmmaking talents.

The Challenge:

Showcase your production talents. A character, prop, line of dialogue, and genre will be created Friday March 28th at 5:00 pm. You will have until Monday March 31st at 5:00 pm to mail a finished, original, project on DVD to the festival. More details will be available to participating entrants after registration via email at 72hour@salemfilmfestival.com. Submissions will be judged and outstanding work will screen during the festival.

2008 CRITERIA

Genre: Buddy Film
Character: Sascha Middlebrook, courageous and clairvoyant.
Prop: Mirror
Line of Dialogue: She slipped and fell.

*Rules and Regulations:

Productions must be original and contain the criteria released on March 28th, 2008. Previously produced music and photos can be used, with artist's permission. Genre must be apparent, character must be acknowledged, prop must be handled, and line of dialogue must be delivered completely as written before the credits begin. Productions must be 7 minutes or less in length, and additional 20 seconds is allowed for credits. Each entrant is responsible for all releases and permissions concerning locations, talent, and content, contained within entrant's production . All entries must be submitted with a completed entry form (.pdf attached).

Entries must be submitted on Mini-DV or DVD and be postmarked no later than March 31st, 2008.

Be safe, be legal, and have fun. All films submitted will be juried by the SFFYAC judging panel. All acceptable entries will be screened April 15th, 6:00pm @ the IKE Box, on Cottage St. in downtown Salem. Award winning entries will be screened Saturday April 19th, 1:30pm @ the Historic Elsinore Theatre during the SFFYAC Award Screening.

Entry Fees :

Entry Fees for The 72-Hour Project: $15 or Free w/additional festival submissions.
Entrants must register online by sending entrant’s name and contact info to: 72hour@salemfilmfestival.com.

Juried selections will be scored in categories including Writing, Performance, Cinematography, and Editing. Awards will be given to “Best in Class”, the highest scoring production in each entry class for both Youth and Amateur and “Technical Merit”, non BiC receiving highest individual scores in scoring cagegories.
