On everybody’s all-time list of great films, Martin Scorsese’s 1980 masterwork contains some of the most riveting work ever committed to celluloid. From Michael Chapman’s breathtaking black-and-white cinematography to brilliant acting (not only De Niro’s Oscar-winning turn as Jake La Motta, but also Oscar-nominated newcomers Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty) to Paul Schrader’s and Mardik Martin’s spare and captivating screenplay, Raging Bull packs as much of a punch as it did a generation ago when it first hit the big screen. If you’ve seen it before, you’ll be astonished at how well this timeless film has aged; if you’ve never seen it, you’ll understand why it’s required viewing not only at film schools, but for anyone wanting to grasp an understanding of human nature.

Mardik Martin (Screenwriter)
Mardik Martin immigrated to the United States from Iraq to attend New York University. He won the Mahler award and graduated with a Master's degree in 1968 and then went on to teach screen writing at NYU from 1968 to 1973. Mardik moved to Hollywood that year after Mean Streets, which he co-wrote with Martin Scorcese, became a huge hit. He worked for Chartoff-Winkler Productions in the years following, writing screenplays like Valentino and collaborating with Scorcese again on Last Waltz before writing the first three drafts of Raging Bull. Now semi-retired, Martin works as a Senior Lecturer at the prestigious USC film school, having mentored and taught thousands of the brightest young luminaries in the movie business.
