Topiary Artist Pearl Fryar in Attendance!
To the quaint, small town of Bishopville, South Carolina, self-taught topiary artist Pearl Fryar is a star, but the laid back, charm and nonchalance of Fryar himself leads us to believe that the considerable notoriety of his work simply brushes right past him. Allowing the story to unfold in Fryar’s own words and through those who know him best, Scott Galloway and Brent Pierson’s inspirational and touching A Man Named Pearl unspools in a decidedly measured Southern rhythm, with the grace and ease of the subject it reflects. His own yard is a three-acre mixture of abstract designs and towering spirals and shapes that would put Edward Scissorhands to shame. Visitors flock from all over the world to gaze awestruck at his creations, but far and away, Fryar is most attentive to the children on field trips and it is his compassionate enthusiasm to encourage and energize others to achieve their creative potential that makes up the heart of both the movie and the man.
