“This affectionate slow-blooming romance mines an understated vein of comic melancholy that the actors’ wistful performances perfectly capture.” –VARIETY
A touchingly poignant, hugely enjoyable road trip through an odd afterlife exclusively reserved for suicide victims, this quirky film is a bit OZ-ish in its quest for finding happiness in unexpected places. Disheartened over a break-up, Zia (ALMOST FAMOUS’ Patrick Fugit) ends up in the lackluster other-world after cutting his wrists, confronted with the humdrum monotony in a country of forlorn fatalities. When he hears rumors that an old girlfriend has “offed” herself, Zia begs his Russian musician friend, Eugene (Shea Wigham), to accompany him on a trek in search of her. Clever, inviting characters pop up along the way, including the gorgeously cynical Mikal (Shannon Sossamon), that kooky marvel Tom Waits as Kneller, leader of an eccentric commune, and a dead-again messiah (Arrested Development’s Will Arnett) hell-bent on performing a miracle. They construct a welcome detour. Surprisingly buoyant, the offbeat WRISTCUTTERS is packed with an unrivaled sincerity and warmth.
