“A brilliant statement on artistic freedom and the dangers it faces. This film should be seen, should be discussed and is an important document on our times.” –FILM THREAT
A curiously advanced hybrid of documentary and narrative, STRANGE CULTURE will absolutely blow you away with its extensive scope on the surrealistic widespread implications and effects trickling down into unforeseen niches as a result of post-9/11 paranoia. Internationally-acclaimed artist and professor Steve Kurtz currently awaits trial as a suspected bioterrorist, his manuscripts, computers and material for ‘MASS MoCA’, an exhibition that allows audiences to test whether food has been genetically modified, were all confiscated after his wife, Hope, surprisingly died in her sleep of heart failure. Skillfully sifting through the legal muck, Hershmann Leeson enlists actors, including Tilda Swinton, Thomas Jay Ryan and Salem Film Festival veteran Josh Kornbluth, to interpret the fractions that Kurtz cannot lawfully discuss. STRANGE CULTURE, urgent and absorbing, is a sharp and personal account of the unexpected repercussions caused by government policy and packs a stunningly emotional wallop.
