“Wonderfully elegiac… the melody of language is essential to the film’s beauty.” – PREMIERE MAGAZINE
This wondrous and compelling drama examines Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen, who, between 1920 and 1924, led five expeditions through Arctic North America, along the way befriending the great shaman Aua and his family and detailing a pivotal moment in Igloolik culture. Slowly encroaching foreign trade, the impending murder investigation of a white man, and the unstoppable spread of Christianity all converged to alter customs, change history and shatter taboos that had been in place for centuries. Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn have created something altogether awe-inspiring in this breathtaking film where fiction and documentary, ethnography and myth, all join in a richly textured and beautiful telling of the Inuit story. They achieve the rare and remarkable feat of at once immersing us in a way of life and simultaneously dramatizing its threatened extinction in this multifaceted look at how one ancient culture was ultimately cast adrift in a sea of intruding modernism.
